Will HTML5 Kill Flash?

twitter.com – facebook.com – HTML5 isn’t going to be something that will just fade away into oblivion, even if Adobe wishes it would. One caller the other night asked me about the differences between the two, and whether or not I think Flash will “die” once HTML5 is more widely used. chris.pirillo.com

On PC, I would recommend Flash. But on phones, HTML5 is perfect. It doesent waste as much battery as much as Flash, and its simpler, better. Flash needs a good machine to run. HTML5 doesent, that makes it perfect for a phone.
@KawazoeJapan Yeah.ure. Considering that most people uses reamweaver, you can realize what im saying. Im a intranet, internet, system, iPad etc developer and, IMO, Dreamweaver (along with Aptana) are one of the best website builders.
Im not talking about get things done but how fast you can do it. Im really assured you have you own niche and clients but can you imagine how many huge corporations uses FLEX or,/and Silverlight as primary “program” ?
@aleste666 Well, maybe if you’d search a little, you’d discover a lot of applications to develop websites like Flux (from The Escapers) or you could do like me and write them top to bottom in C++ using the Wt toolkit and javascript. I tend to dislike WYSIWYG editors since then often add a lot of bloat to the code and slow it down. When you write websites that have to handle millions of connections, you want those milliseconds back as well as the maintainability you get from not using Flash.
@KawazoeJapan Whats the point of HTML5 being open and stuff if the best development tools still will be Adobe Dreamweaver CS6-7 or AnimStudioBuilder ( another name for the olf Flash Builder ) ? Adobe wins anyway. Sure you can develop a web in your notepad but, seriously, its way much faster using Dreamweaver.
@jogelogy amen
Yes! HTML5 will kill flash!
Anyone with this much Apple product on his desk is clearly has a specific opinion they’re pushing. Statements like:
“HTML5 play back happens on the iPad or the iPhone, aw, right now. Flash doesn’t need to exist.”
“You could, you know, play my live video feed on the iPad or iPod touch or the iPhone right now with HTML5, can’t do it with Flash. And it looks better!”
You can’t do that with Flash because Apple won’t allow Flash on these devices. It’s not the fault of Flash.
@decapattack HTML5 will become final next year. As for your comment, it makes absolutely no sense in relation with your previous one. First you say that we will need to update our browser often so that we keep up with the standard, then you say the real update will only happen in 10 years. I think you need to make up your mind. Besides, updating chrome is literally seamless so you shouldn’t even have to care about updates in the first place.
@KawazoeJapan Yeah, in 2021. until there we will be timetraveling and who knows what can appear in the interwebs, maybe a flash/html5 killer maybe.
@decapattack HTML5 is a standard, just like HTML4. Not a software. Once it gets out of the draft stage, it will be fixed in time until HTML6 which won’t be before a couple of years.
@MoisesZTech It is funny, because people would pay more for something you could do on the Zune HD for less.
@meankookoo Lol “Zune HD is actually a perfect media player compared to the iPod Touch”…now THAT’S funny
Doesn’t make sense … with html5 you wont need to download a plugin but to use a new feature of html5 you will have to update your browser.. so whats the difference?
@d1me07 agreed. that being said, as everyone has said, if youtube comppletely switches to HTML 5, it’s only a matter of time before the other major video sites follow suit, effectively rendering flash redundant, at least for video. now games and the like will probably still utilize flash in some form or fashion. for how long is uncertain. at any rate, here comes web 3.0, ready or not
You better hope HTML5 kicks off, Apple wont be supporting flash anytime soon. LAWL.
– Sent from my android phone, in-brower, because it supports flash
ubuntu 10.10 firefox standed no add ons that comes with ubuntu

Then when HTML5 becomes popular Adobe comes out with something better because Adobe doesn’t like to come second in anything. Just look at their Photoshop and try to compare it to their competitors. They will quadruple all of the money spent on the development of HTML5 to make something that is better than HTML5.
@grafxnrg Actually, the HD-DVD was created by a number of companies but not Microsoft. Toshiba were the main creators of the HD-DVD format, Microsoft just used HD-DVD because at the time Toshiba was telling Microsoft oh Blu-Ray is going to be too impractical and expensive to actually put on the market to reassure Microsoft. The Zune HD is actually a perfect media player compared to the iPod Touch, comparison wise. Apple overprices every single thing they sell and call it revolutionary.
Adobe is a company that is holding up technology…. human development….
html5 is the future! Invest in learning the new APIs it supports!
@grafxnrg u r wrong Microsoft innovates and patches it doesnt copy lmao seriously i love vista
@d1me07 What are you talking about? Apple has been creating and innovating! Microsoft has been copying and patching. Just take a look at VISTA … just take a look at ZUNE … just take a look at HD-DVD. You need to be educated before you blame a company as being hippocrites in tech.
HTML5 video takes much more CPU than Flash video
…also flash doomsayers = undisclosed apple fanboys
Like it or not, there will always be room for a platform that is relatively closed and obfuscated
Video streaming was always an artificial boost for flash… it is not what flash was designed for… it just happened to fill a role no one else could tackle properly at the time since RealMedia and Quicktime have always been shit… and only good if you’re looking to get some “surpriseware” on your PC…. with HTML5… flash will just keep doing what it was originally meant for and all those flash games and flash banners are not gonna be replaced by some open HTML5 SVG+JS platform.
Thumbs up if you’re playing youtube using HTML5 smoothly on an unmodified 5 year old or older laptop like I do =P
